Enable Default VC Elements switch does not make a difference

Hi, I’d like to do things like add margins between my columns. Usually I do that by going to the Design Option in the VC element where I can change margins, padding and borders. Those options are disabled in your theme.
I tried the “Enable Default VC Elements” in the general tab under the theme settings. That makes no difference. How can I enable all original VC elements please.
