Page Categories

Hi I am looking to make a case studies section of a site that will work very similar to a blog. I.e it should be able to have a landing page that can filter the results based on categories and also on the story itself it should be able show relevant other stories.

The problem is that I dont want to use the standard blog template (which I am using for other more blog related content). I want to use the flexible page design offered on pages. I tried adding categories to pages but the “show category” option on Visual Composer isnt pulling it through. Is it possible to make it bring through the page categories?

Failing that is it possible to have blog content use a the blank page template so that it takes the same flexible page style options but has the category tagging etc of blogs?
